“Kaji Tech will launch to market a new compressor that will lead to cost reduction of fuel cell vehicle (FCV) hydrogen stations by the end of FY2021. The compression mechanism has been simplified compared to the conventional model. The client company has entered a performance confirmation test, and as soon as good results are obtained, they will start full-scale proposals. The Japan’s national "Hydrogen/Fuel Cell Strategy Roadmap" sets a cost target of 2025 to be reduced 45%, compared to 2016. They intend to achieve it with new models and their scaling up effects.

The new compressor has a standard discharge pressure of 82 MPa and a discharge rate of 340 Nm3/h, improving the conventional 3-cylinder 5-stage compression type to 2-cylinder 4-stage compression. Considering stable maintainability at the installation site, they avoided making the compressor unit excessively compact. They are conscious of controlling not only the introduction cost but also the operation cost.

The compressor unit that compresses gaseous hydrogen to ultra-high pressure is one of the main devices that makes up a hydrogen station. Reducing the cost of stations is an issue for the realization of a hydrogen-based society through the spread of FCVs, and Japan’s national government has set cost reduction targets for each major device and is encouraging manufacturers to innovate. Kaji Tech has reached a reduction of about 30% with the current model against the target of 45% reduction, and aims to further reduction with the new model.

Kaji Tech's compressors have been delivered to 39 stations nationwide by FY2020. According to the national roadmap, there are plans to develop 320 stations by 2025 and 900 stations by 2030. The cost target is set on the assumption that one company will produce 100 units a year, and in order to achieve it, it is essential not only to introduce new models but also to expand the market as expected.” (Nikkan Kogyo Shinbun)
